What It Runs

The question becomes what to do with the surplus

A system this size makes more during the day than a typical household can use while the sun is up. That is not a flaw — it is the point — but it does change the decision from how much you generate to where the extra goes.

At midday, all at once
10.0 kW

What can run simultaneously on a clear day. Capped by the 10kW inverter rather than the panels.

Across a whole day
54 kWh

Annual-average generation in the Sydney region. A typical Australian household uses 15 to 20 kWh a day in total.

Car charging while the house runs
  • EV charger (7kW, single phase)7.00 kW
  • Pool pump (single speed)1.10 kW
  • Fridge-freezer (300–500 L)200 W
  • LED lighting, whole house150 W
  • Running together8.45 kW

That is 85% of what the system is producing at midday, with 1.55 kW still spare — going to the grid unless something else uses it.

Export it, or redirect it

Surplus you send to the grid earns the feed-in tariff, which is a few cents. The same energy used at home displaces power you would have bought at the full rate — several times more valuable. That is what a battery, an EV charger, or simply moving hot water and the pool pump into daylight are really for. Our running-cost guides work through which of those pays back fastest for your household.

Appliance draws are electrical input, not nameplate cooling capacity — an air conditioner sold as 5kW uses about 1.32kW of electricity. Figures verified 2026-10-03. Generation is an annual average; a clear summer day is higher and a wet winter day far lower. None of this works in a blackout without a battery.
