What It Runs

Is 6.6kW enough?

For most of what a family home does during daylight, comfortably. The useful thing to know is where it stops — and that the ceiling is set by the inverter rather than the panels.

At midday, all at once
5.0 kW

What can run simultaneously on a clear day. Capped by the 5kW inverter rather than the panels.

Across a whole day
27 kWh

Annual-average generation in the Sydney region. A typical Australian household uses 15 to 20 kWh a day in total.

A summer afternoon, all at once
  • Fridge-freezer (300–500 L)200 W
  • LED lighting, whole house150 W
  • Split system, living room (5kW)1.32 kW
  • Split system, bedroom (2.5kW)500 W
  • Dishwasher2.40 kW
  • Running together4.57 kW

That is 91% of what the system is producing at midday, with 0.43 kW still spare — going to the grid unless something else uses it.

Where it runs out

A 6.6kW array is paired with a 5kW inverter, which is deliberate and standard — panels rarely hit their rating, so the inverter is sized for real output rather than the label. It does mean your ceiling at any moment is 5kW, not 6.6kW. Ducted air conditioning running flat out alongside a pool pump will cross it, and an EV charger on top of either will cross it comfortably. For a household without those three, 6.6kW is the right answer and the most installed size in Australia for good reason.

Appliance draws are electrical input, not nameplate cooling capacity — an air conditioner sold as 5kW uses about 1.32kW of electricity. Figures verified 2026-10-03. Generation is an annual average; a clear summer day is higher and a wet winter day far lower. None of this works in a blackout without a battery.
