Solar Batteries in Wollongong: 2026 Costs, Rebates and Sizing

24 October 2026•7 min read

About $3,800 to $6,600 for 10 to 18 kWh after incentives. What the tiered federal rebate is worth, how to size a battery, and how one joins the solar you already have.

A home battery in Wollongong costs roughly $3,800 to $6,600 installed in 2026 for 10 to 18 kWh of storage, after the federal and NSW incentives. Whether one pays for itself depends on two numbers most quotes skip: how much solar you currently export, and how much power you use after dark. This guide covers the rebate, the prices on our own list, how to size a battery, and the checks that matter if you already have solar.

The short answer

  • The federal rebate takes about $2,520 off a 10 kWh battery and about $3,402 off 13.5 kWh.

  • A battery earns about 27c for every kilowatt-hour it stores and you use later, on our NSW figures: power you would have bought at 32c, from solar you would have exported for 5c.

  • Size it to your evening use, not to the biggest number you can afford. Storage you cannot fill or empty most days earns nothing.

  • Already have solar? The age of your inverter decides how a battery is added. That is the first thing to check.

What the battery rebates are worth

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a discount at the point of sale, like the solar rebate. Since 1 May 2026 it has been tiered by usable capacity:

Usable capacity

Share of the full rate

Discount, approximately

First 14 kWh

100% (about $252 per kWh)

10 kWh: $2,520 · 13.5 kWh: $3,402

14 to 28 kWh

60%

16 kWh: $3,830 · 20 kWh: $4,435

28 to 50 kWh

15%

Very little extra per kWh

The taper matters for sizing. Past 14 kWh, each extra kilowatt-hour attracts less discount, so a very large battery is relatively more expensive. The battery rebate calculator works out the figure for any size.

On top of that, NSW pays an incentive when you connect an eligible battery to a virtual power plant (VPP). Its value depends on the VPP you join. The separate NSW upfront battery discount ended for installations from 1 July 2025. Our rebates page keeps both schemes current.

Battery prices on our list

These are prices from our own list in October 2026, installed, after the federal and NSW incentives. They assume a straightforward installation alongside a compatible inverter.

Price is only part of the comparison. Warranty terms, backup capability, monitoring and how the battery pairs with your inverter all differ. Our 10 kWh battery comparison sets the main brands side by side, and the battery range shows what each one includes.

Does a battery pay for itself?

A battery saves money by moving solar from the middle of the day, when you export it for about 5c, into the evening, when you would otherwise buy power at about 32c. That 27c gap is what it earns per kilowatt-hour.

Take the 10 kWh Sungrow at about $5,097. Filled and emptied completely every day of the year, it would return about $985. Allowing for winter, cloudy weeks and days you are away, something nearer $690 a year is realistic, which puts simple payback at around seven years. That is slower than solar panels, and it is a real return.

Two situations make it faster. If you export most of what your panels make, there is plenty of surplus to store. And if your household uses a lot of power between 5pm and 7am, the battery empties fully each night. The solar savings calculator models both.

How to size a battery

Look at two numbers on your bill or your solar monitoring.

  1. Evening and overnight use. For many households it is somewhere around 8 to 14 kWh between sunset and sunrise; your bill or monitoring will show yours. That is the most a battery can usefully deliver each day.

  2. Daily solar surplus. A 6.6kW system makes about 27 kWh a day on average. If you use half of that during the day, about 13 kWh is left to store in summer, and less in winter.

The right battery is roughly the smaller of the two. For many Wollongong homes with a 6.6kW system, that lands at 10 to 13.5 kWh. If you are adding an EV or moving to all-electric, size for where you are heading. If your solar system is small, more panels may come before a battery; our comparison of a battery versus more panels runs both options.

Adding a battery to the solar you already have

Many Illawarra roofs already carry a system, some of them more than ten years old. There are two ways to add a battery:

  • AC-coupled. The battery comes with its own inverter and sits beside your existing system, which keeps working as it is. This suits a healthy, newer inverter.

  • Hybrid. A hybrid inverter replaces the old one and runs the panels and the battery together. This suits an inverter near the end of its life.

We go through how to choose on our Fairy Meadow battery page, and if the old inverter is the question, our guide to replacing an old inverter covers repair against replacement.

Where the battery goes

The battery installation standard, AS/NZS 5139, keeps home batteries out of habitable rooms, roof spaces and escape routes. A garage wall or a protected external wall, out of direct sun, is the usual spot. Parts of Wollongong are flood-affected, including streets in the Fairy and Cabbage Tree Creeks catchment, so the battery and inverter should sit well above the flood level. Wollongong City Council can give you flood information for your property.

Will a battery keep the lights on in a blackout?

Not automatically. Backup needs a battery and inverter that support it, and wiring that separates the circuits you want kept on. If backup matters to you, say so before the quote is written, because it changes the hardware. Our battery blackout backup guide explains what to ask for.

Common questions

How much does a solar battery cost in Wollongong?

From about $3,800 to $6,600 installed for 10 to 18 kWh on our October 2026 list, after the federal and NSW incentives. Larger batteries cost more, and the federal discount tapers above 14 kWh.

Is a battery worth it in Wollongong?

For a household that exports a lot of solar and uses power in the evening, usually yes, with simple payback around six to eight years on our figures. For a home that already uses most of its solar during the day, it is a slower return.

Can I get the battery rebate if I already have solar?

Yes. The federal discount applies to an eligible battery whether it goes in with new panels or is added to an existing system.

What size battery do I need?

Roughly the smaller of your evening and overnight use and your daily solar surplus. For many homes with a 6.6kW system that is 10 to 13.5 kWh.

Do you install batteries across the Illawarra?

Yes, from Corrimal and Wollongong down to Dapto and Shell Cove. Our office is in North Wollongong.

Work out your battery

The battery rebate calculator gives you the discount for any size, and the solar system size calculator shows how much storage your appliances call for. If you already have solar, send us a photo of your inverter label and we will tell you which way a battery can be added. See how we add batteries to existing systems.
