When the inverter backs off

Why a healthy system makes less at midday

A production graph with a flat top or a dip at noon on a cloudless day is not a broken system, and it is not dirty panels. It is almost always grid voltage, and it is the one thing about rooftop solar that gets explained least often — usually because the explanation does not end in a sale.

230 volts, with a ceiling

Australian supply is nominally 230 volts. By default a grid-connected inverter begins trimming its output as the voltage it sees climbs past about 253, and stops altogether if a ten-minute average sits above 258. An inverter doing that is following the standard it was certified to.

Distance and company

Voltage rises along every stretch of cable carrying power. Out past Yarramalong, Dooralong and Jilliby that means the length of the line. In the Warnervale and Wadalba estates it means a street full of systems all exporting at the same moment. Both end at the same place on a sunny afternoon.

The cable run is yours

Part of the rise happens on your own side of the meter, between the inverter and the switchboard. That part is a design decision — inverter position and cable size — made before install day and almost impossible to fix cheaply afterwards.

A bigger system does not solve a voltage limit

If what is capping your exports is the voltage at your connection, more panels push against the same ceiling and you have paid for capacity you cannot use. The honest answers are less profitable and more durable: get the inverter near the switchboard with a properly sized run, move what load you can into the middle of the day, and consider a battery — which helps here for a reason that has nothing to do with blackouts, because it absorbs the midday surplus instead of pushing it into a grid that is already high. If an existing system is underperforming, the first thing to do is log the voltage for a few days. If the supply itself is sitting high, that is a matter for your network to investigate, not a reason to buy anything.

Network rules change and every connection is approved on its own merits — we confirm the limit that applies to your address in writing before install day.

If the builder already put something on the roof

A lot of houses at Warnervale, Wadalba, Hamlyn Terrace and Woongarrah came with a small system included in the build. It was sized to meet the energy requirements for a new dwelling rather than to cover a family's bill, which is why it so often falls short. You have three options — more panels on the existing inverter, a second inverter alongside, or a new inverter keeping the panels — and an expansion is assessed under today's connection rules rather than the ones the house was approved under. Our Oran Park page goes through each route and what it costs you in warranty terms.

Batteries

Adding a battery in Wyong

Home batteries attract two separate incentives. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program takes an estimated $3,402 off a 13.5 kWh battery, and NSW’s NSW VPP connection incentive (battery via federal program) can add more on top. Already have solar? We check your inverter first — some systems take a battery as they are, others need a hybrid inverter.

+ NSW

NSW virtual power plant (VPP) incentive when you connect an eligible battery to a VPP, on top of the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount. The NSW upfront battery discount ended for installs from 1 July 2025.

Planning an EV?

Size your solar for it now. Our 10kW package comes pre-wired for a battery and an EV charger, so adding one later is a small job rather than a rebuild.

From quote to switch-on

How a Wyong install works

  1. Step 1

    Free assessment

We review your roof, shading, switchboard and a recent bill. On a long block or at the end of a rural line, we look at where the inverter can sit relative to the switchboard before we size anything.

  2. Step 2

    Written quote

A quote naming the panel and inverter models, the system size, the total price and what is excluded — including the cable run if it is long enough to matter.

  3. Step 3

    Network approval

We lodge your grid-connection application and confirm any export limit before install day.

  4. Step 4

    Installation

CEC-accredited electricians install, test and commission the system, then clean up. You are told who is coming.

  5. Step 5

    Switch-on

Your retailer updates the meter and we set up monitoring that records voltage as well as production — so if the system ever starts backing off, you have the evidence rather than a theory.
